Starting from Fanano, you immediately climb just below the summit of Mount Cimone, then dive headlong toward the charming village of Fiumalbo, where the two routes separate.
Those on the SHORT route, after crossing into Tuscany, return to the starting point via the Croce Arcana Pass, thus completing the entire circumnavigation of the highest peak in the Appennini Medenesi.
Those who decide to measure themselves against the LONG route continue toward the Secchia riv-er in the province of Reggio Emilia, eventually completing the loop of the Cusna group, the other "giant" of the Appennini Medenesi.
The long route concludes by following the same final stretch as the short one, returning to Fanano via the passo della Croce Arcana.
